Are you looking to get a dog? First time dog owner perhaps?

Here’s a few things you should know about dog breeds when you are choosing the one you want.

Dogs are wonderful companions, but different breeds have different traits that may manifest themselves in problem behaviors.

For instance, breeds that were originally bred for hunting, such as Beagles and Bloodhounds, may have a strong prey drive, making them more likely to chase after small animals, even if it means running into the street.

Similarly, breeds that were originally bred for herding, such as Border Collies and Australian Shepherds, may have a strong instinct to nip at people’s heels or chase after moving objects, which can be problematic if they do so with children or bicycles.

Breeds that were originally bred for companionship, such as Chihuahuas and Bichon Frise, may be prone to separation anxiety or excessive barking if left alone for too long.

It’s important to note that while breed traits can be a factor in problem behavior, every dog is an individual and may not exhibit all of the characteristics of their breed. Proper socialization, enrichment, exercise and training can help mitigate problem behaviors, regardless of breed.

It’s important for caregivers to be aware of their dog’s breed traits and work with a force free professional trainer or behaviorist to address any problem behaviors that may arise.

So how do you choose?

Start by looking at your lifestyle. Do you have room and time for a very active type of dog that you can take for long walks and do training and loads of enrichment with.

Or are you more into the laid-back couch potato type of dog?

Are you a first-time caregiver of dogs or a very experienced caregiver?

Do you like them small or big? Or somewhere in between?

Do you want to be able to teach them tricks?

Puppy or rescue dog?

Are you willing to take on a dog with behaviour issues? If so, how severe?

As you can see there are many things to consider…

Our pets only have us and they rely on us for everything. Food, shelter, safety, affection. Let’s give them the best possible lives we can. Let’s give them choices to enrich them. And most of all let’s learn to listen to their communication so that we both may benefit from mutual trust and a loving relationship.
